Africa access to oil already ‘rationed’: Meles

Addis Ababa, January 26- Africa is already being priced out of access to fossil fuel by rising oil costs and has no option but to turn to alternative energy, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the leader of sub-Saharan Africa’s second most populous nation said the high cost of traditional energy could ultimately benefit the developing world by forcing the pace of change.

“Most Africans will be priced out of modern energy, therefore it is crucial (to have) access to biofuels, solar power,” said Meles.

Public Hearings after Laws Serve No Purpose; Cultural Reform Urgent

Written by FORTUNE Editor
It was last weekend that large crowds of people gathered at the sparsely distributed halls across the city with an urge to voice their grievances over the new land lease proclamation. Suspicion filled the air with government officials largely sticking to the lines of argument provided to them in written form from central command.

No flexibility existed. Some of the meetings even saw furious landholders openly questioning the knowledge of local government officials.

As little as the chance for any amendment to the proclamation may be, the gatherings demonstrated the major weaknesses of the lawmaking system of the country. It revealed the narrowness of the legislative buffer in the rather closed societal base.

Stability is only secured as far as traditionally sensitive areas are left undisturbed, the meetings unveiled. It was all like fire fighting for the government officials. They were largely pushed to the margins of reaction.

Feeling the heat, Eritrea responds to the recent terrorist act committed against tourist in Ethiopia!

In its letter of 18 January to the UN Security Council, the Government of Ethiopia misconstrues the tragic events of the deplorable killing of five foreign tourists in northern Ethiopia by armed gunmen to falsely accuse Eritrea of "direct involvement". Furthermore, the Ethiopian regime ratchets these trumped up charges to goad the UN Security Council to take punitive measures against Eritrea and warns that "it will, (otherwise), be obliged to take whatever action is necessary to stop the activities of the Eritrea regime once and for all".

Ethiopia overtakes Colombia as world’s number three coffee producer

Botanical evidence suggests Coffee first grew wild in Ethiopia’s fertile highlands.

LONDON Jan 16 – The International Coffee Organization on Monday raised its estimate of the global coffee crop in 2011/12 to 132.4 million 60 kg bags as Ethiopia overtook Colombia as the world’s number three producer.

The crop was revised up from a previous forecast of 128.6 million, largely reflecting an improved outlook in Ethiopia. It remained, however, shy of the prior season’s 134.2 million bags. The ICO, in a monthly update, put Ethiopia’s 2011/12 crop at 9.80 million bags, up from a previous forecast of 6.35 million and the prior season’s 7.50 million.
